By Ryan Winslett 3 years ago Those of you trying to play Halo: The Master Chief Collection and experiencing online woes should probably boot up the game and give it another go, as the folks at Industries have announced yet another patch geared at improving matchmaking and parties, as well as quite a few other tweaks and fixes. Sadly, these past couple of generations haven’t been too kind to online gamers. It’s impossible to stress test an online game properly before launch and, even following in-house testing and big betas, you still never really know how a game will behave when it’s shipped out to millions of new players. When a trophy was handed out for Best Online Experience during this year’s The Game Awards , I saw a lot of people laughing in message boards and across social media, wondering how such an award even existed. In this age where online games come out wonky more often than not, however, I can totally see wanting to celebrate those developers who managed to get it right. Sadly, that wasn’t the case for Halo: The Master Chief Collection , an Xbox One title comprised of four full Halo games, as well as their online components.

And Industries might be comprised of a lot of folks that love the franchise, and have overseen a lot of its supplemental universe development, but as far as developer track records go their team as a whole is sort of unproven. The plot for Halo 4 picks up a little while after the end of Halo 3, which ended with Master Chief and AI Cortana essentially asleep inside a vessel drifting through space. When Halo 4 begins, we find the Chief and Cortana much as we left them, but they are quickly awakened after being scanned by an unknown source, and come to find that while Earth may be at some form of tentative peace with the Covenant, that apparently not everyone got the same message.
From there the story escalates in typical Halo fashion, as Master Chief and Cortana touch-down on a new planet, constructed by the mythical Forerunners, and populated by the new enemy type dubbed Prometheans. From a control perspective the game feels downright identical to the Bungie developed games in the series. There are some additions, like the use of permanent timer based power-ups from Reach that Master Chief can now make use of, introducing elements like the jetpack and hard light shields for temporary deployment.
Map layouts for the Campaign and Spartan Ops missions feel suitably open ended, featuring a number of ways to take on and engage in most firefights. But the core components of combat, namely that almost puzzle like quality to figuring out how to take on a group of foes in an open, arena like setting, remains largely untouched and intact. Outside of the Campaign mode, Halo 4 offers up some much anticipated multiplayer via the newly dubbed Infinity mode.
Infinity contains both your standard competitive multiplayer modes, and the new Spartan Ops mode, which replaces Firefight from the last couple of games. Spartan Ops is actually pretty fun, offering up what is essentially five mini-stages every week via downloadable content for free to Halo 4 owners. These stages can be played solo or cooperatively with friends, have actual story hooks to them, and offer up new characters and scenarios not already featured through the campaign mode of the game, and also take place after the end of the campaign.
Of course, competitive multiplayer is still present in full force, with a handful of changes.

Tweet on Twitter This is not an update anyone wants to hear, but it may be time to get real about the future of Halo: The Master Chief Collection. By now, you know the story. The Master Chief Collection was the stuff of dreams, especially for fans who were adopters of the Original Xbox…at least on the surface.
Ten days ago we told you about an apology made by Industries Studio Head, Bonnie Ross in relation to the Halo Masterchief Collection Matchmaking problems. Skip forward to today though and most.
Issues ranging from matchmaking errors, to long wait times, to severely imbalanced teams keep coming in, despite multiple patches on both the server side of the game and the game client since launch. Late yesterday, Bonnie Ross, head of Industries issued a statement on the Halo Waypoint blog acknowledging the issues and promising multiple fixes in the coming weeks. Ross was quick to point out that the issues gamers are facing are not problems that appeared in their pre-launch test environment, and noted that the team is trying to come up with new solutions to address the issues.
The full statement from Ross can be seen below. The Master Chief Collection. The Master Chief Collection, however, we have not delivered the experience you deserve. Halo 5: Guardians – 343 Studio Head Talks About Matchmaking And Playlists
Rumors have been floating around that a campaign mode will be playable at the event, but no confirmation has been given. For me, this erodes what is the essence of Halo: It would also slow the game considerably at higher skill levels as players resort to peek shooting and turtling up in cover.
Nov 12, · After one of the worst launches in the last few months for online play, Halo: The Master Chief Collection‘s matchmaking service appears up and running.I’ve been able to .
Try one Twitter search on ” Halo 5 Servers ,” and you are destined to see players complain about server quality since the dawn of time. What can be discussed in regards to servers, though, is a new form of matchmaking, as brought up from a recent post on the Halo Waypoint forums by Joshua Menke, Lead Engagement Designer for Halo. New Matchmaking Offers Less Wait Time, but Potentially More Imbalance Menke has kept a running series of Matchmaking Feedback posts, musing over the current state of how well players can connect to one another in a lobby that both has a good connection and a fair playing field.
What he does can be considered a gold standard of how developers can get constructive feedback from the community and provide updates on features, but all of that is a discussion for another day. In his latest post, Menke revealed the tweak to matchmaking in SWAT and Free-For-All playlists, which is the expansion of search time in lobbies to have players “be guaranteed a match without having to restart their search.
Halo has had three methods of searching for lobbies. Focused gives players the best chance at finding the lobby with the best connection and equal skill at the cost of more time searching for a match. And of course, the Balanced search option splits the difference between the two search methods. The idea is that players who search on Focused will almost always have that tight matchmaking, but other players will potentially match up against high level players if they or the other player is left searching for a match for several minutes.
After offering a fix that involves matchmaking Ranked and Social players together who choose the same playlist, he immediately gave the critiques, including players throwing matches and the unpredictability of Social players in regards to their skill or willingness to play hard. Is Population a Problem? With this discussion in mind, one has to ask: Is there a declining player base within Halo 5?
